Public Domain and Creative Common Websites

ccMixer.org- This first website that I found offers up to thousands of creative commons licensed remixed songs, any genre is available. This site could be helpful if you needed to use a track for a movie and didn't want to pay to copyright fee. Archive.org- This site offers a huge selection of audio, video, and text documents under the Creative Commons license. This site is a good site to go to in general for anything to do with Creative Commons. The Public Domain Project by Pond5- This is a way to make historic media files available for Creative Projects, it has over 60 thousand files in a collection. This is a good place to go if you needed something for a project to do with English Class

Copyright Decision Tool

Case One Newspaper Article- If you were to publish a newspaper article for educational purposes, and it was part of the course pack, this would be considered a fair dealing. If you were to use this for anything else it would be considered an unfair dealing and would fall under the copyright act. Case Two-Book If you were to use a book for educational purposes as part of a class handout, this would also be considered as a fair dealing. If you were to use it to be published as your own, it would fall under the copyright act right away. Case Three-Musical Score  If you were to use a Musical Score for your own private study, this would be a fair dealing. But if you claimed it as your own it would be considered an unfair dealing.

Fair Dealing Situations

Case One- Research If a student decided to not give credit to someone's work that is automatically a copyright, this is a big offence to not give credit, but as long as you are using the work for research and give the credit the work will not be considered an unfair dealing.   Case Two-Education        If the work is a certain type of work, 10% of the of the work may be copied for educational use.     Case Three-Criticism     When given a research assignment, the student may copy 10% of the work, and can include sentences within the work, as long as the authors name is mentioned somewhere throughout the work.     Case Four- Private Study           For private study the same rules apply as research, only 10% of the work can be copied and the authors name must be mentioned somewhere in the work.
